How Long Does Underfloor Heating Installation Take?
In a straightforward single room, the underfloor heating installation itself may take around 1–2 days. But the complete floor can take longer depending on the subfloor, preparation required, the heating system and the finished floor going on top.
The biggest variable is often what is underneath the existing floor. A sound concrete base can be relatively straightforward, while timber, floorboards or plywood may need additional preparation and strengthening before the heating and tiling work can begin.
Concrete or Timber? The Subfloor Can Change the Installation Time
Underfloor heating is only one part of the floor build-up. Before the system is installed, the existing subfloor needs to be checked for stability, level and suitability for the finished floor going on top.
A sound concrete floor can often be a relatively straightforward starting point. Timber, floorboards and plywood can need more preparation because movement in the base can affect both the heating installation and any tile or natural-stone finish above it.

A sound concrete base may only need cleaning, levelling or insulation preparation before the heating system is installed.
Timber or Plywood
Timber floors can flex. Loose boards, movement or insufficient rigidity may need to be corrected before the heating and finished floor are installed.
It creates a stable base for the underfloor heating and also forms the foundation for the tile or natural-stone installation above it.
Why Wooden Floors Can Add Time to an Underfloor Heating Installation
Timber, floorboard and plywood subfloors need particular attention because movement in the floor can affect everything installed above them.
Before installing underfloor heating, we assess whether the existing floor is secure, sufficiently rigid and suitable for the proposed floor build-up.
Where additional preparation is required, this can include securing loose areas and installing a suitable cement-based tile backer board or other compatible preparation system to create the stable base required for the heating system and the finished floor.
